The Scrawl Collective is the leading website and online gallery that features unique graffiti artwork, graphics and prints. The Scrawl Collective began in 1998 after the publication of a book dedicated to the graffiti artwork scene – Scrawl, Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters. The 80s graffiti artwork scene was influenced by comic books and Japanese Anime, and many of the graffiti artists went on to become printers, illustrators and designers.

Ric Blackshaw, one of the authors of Scrawl, Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters, was inspired to set up the Scrawl Collective agency. It was a place dedicated to graffiti artwork and the hand-made, amateur approach to art rather than Mac-produced graphics. The motto for the Scrawl Collective was therefore: ‘Hand B4 Mouse’. By 2001, a second book ‘Scrawl Too, More Dirt’ was published and the Scrawl Collective agency had grown to incorporate graffiti artwork and prints from 12 artists. As well as creating books, the collective undertook events and exhibitions all over the world.

The graffiti artwork really took off, and the collective grew allegiances with big commercial names such as Sony Music, Nike and Puma, who supported exhibitions and events the Scrawl Collective put on all over the world. The artwork from the agency, including graffiti artwork, became highly collectable and today the agency has widened its remit from graffiti artwork to include a roster of inspiring new young artists.
