Keywords—The Way To Effective Search Engine Optimisation

One of the most effective methods to achieving your search engine optimisation goals is by identifying the right keywords to use on your website. Well defined and easy to remember keywords are what help people remember your site. This is especially true when using search engines or directories to find a particular topic or website.

As most search engines ask users to type in the name, topic or keywords they are looking for, good keywords help increase your chances of getting noticed. This means having your site listed near, or even at the top of the list. So how can you as a website owner harness your search engine optimisation efforts and the power of these keywords?

Put yourself in the customer’s shoes. Ask yourself: how would I search for the product or service I’m looking for? What keywords would I type in to find these? What keywords or key phrases best describe your product or service? Once you’ve figured these out, you’re on your way to successful search engine optimisation.

Try and use specific keywords and phrases. A lot of people think that using generic keywords can easily get them a spot on major search engine and directory listings. Easy recall, they argue. What these people don’t realize is that this isn’t a directory that only covers a certain area. This is the Internet and you are competing with the world here. Try and type in “snooker equipment” and you will be greeted with thousands of entries—most of which are irrelevant since they are outside your country. Why not try and key in “UK snooker equipment shops” and you’ll be a lot closer to home, literally. Try and combine the two—generic and specific. This will not only help searchers but your website as well. You will be competing in a smaller arena and the fewer the players, the better your chances of getting visitors.

Whilst you should know who your direct competitors are, also remember that you do exist in the World Wide Web—the whole world. Try and read up on what your keywords or terms might mean in other countries or markets. You may just be a small English firm but being listed on the web immediately makes you a global player. And this means that you can expect calls from people from other countries once in a while. So make sure that you reach out to as many people and cultures as possible.

Depending on your budget, you should come up with as many keywords or phrases as possible. This is basically to reach more types of people and markets more easily. But make sure that you follow the steps labove. Don’t just pluck one from the top of your head and use it. For search engine optimisation to be really effective, you must do your homework.
